What’s the average age for menopause?

In the UK, the average age that a woman will go through the menopause is 51, with most women first experiencing menopausal symptoms between the ages of 45 and 55.

Some women simply put early signs of menopause, such as more prominent wrinkles and hair loss, down to getting older, but these can in fact be perimenopausal symptoms. This doesn’t mean you should worry though; knowing what they are means there are steps you can take to manage them.

Here, we’re going to talk you through what to expect from menopause at every stage to reassure you that the symptoms you’re experiencing are normal and natural, and that you’re not alone.

Perimenopause symptoms: Age 40

Although the average age for menopause is 51, some women experience early menopause, which can also be known as perimenopause. The early onset of menopause can be down to genetics, but it can also be triggered by some medical conditions and treatments.

Early menopause can be especially distressing if women are not expecting to go through it for another decade or so, but there are natural menopause supplements available that can help manage symptoms in your 40s.

If you’re having trouble sleeping, are lacking energy and are experiencing mood swings out of nowhere, these could be signs that you’re going through perimenopause.

Your hair looking thinner, feeling more brittle and perhaps even falling out could be linked to early menopause too, as could irregular periods or a change to their flow.

Dryer skin and more visible wrinkles may also be signs of perimenopause. This is because oestrogen helps with collagen production, and a good collagen supply keeps your skin looking and feeling plump and youthful. So, when oestrogen levels naturally start to decline as menopause approaches, wrinkles can appear more prominent.

But you don’t have to put up with this - many menopause supplements contain natural ingredients that can mimic the effects of oestrogen in your body, helping to keep your skin looking younger for longer.

Menopause symptoms: Age 50

The normal age for menopause is in your 50s, and this is when you’re most likely to find yourself experiencing common menopausal symptoms.

You’ll know you’re in menopause when your periods have stopped, due to a decline in your body’s oestrogen levels.

At the same time, you may find your ability to sleep getting worse, and you could experience hot flushes, night sweats, a lack of energy and a loss of libido. These symptoms can be closely linked; feeling hot, embarrassed and tired can make you feel a world away from sexy, but you can manage these symptoms with menopause supplements for your 50s.

Post-menopause symptoms: Age 60 and beyond

Unfortunately, menopause symptoms don’t always end along with your 50s; many women experience post-menopausal symptoms in their 60s and beyond.

You’ll officially be in post-menopause when it’s been 12 months or more since your last period. At this stage, you may still be experiencing hot flushes, night sweats, trouble sleeping and a lack of energy.

Uncomfortable and embarrassing vaginal dryness can also be a problem at this stage, as can aching muscles and joints, stopping you from living your life the way you’d like to.

What’s more, the drop in your oestrogen levels may have lowered your bone density, increasing your risk of potentially debilitating osteoporosis.

You don’t have to live with post-menopause symptoms for the rest of your life; there are different options available to help you to manage them and feel more like yourself again, including our range of menopause supplements for your 60s.
