New Study Links HRT with Blood Clot Risk

Using HRT (hormone replacement therapy) to manage menopause symptoms has been linked with an increased risk of blood clots in a new study.

New HRT Study Links HRT and Blood Clots

Carried out by scientists from the University of Nottingham, the research found that HRT containing equine oestrogen can lead to a small rise in a woman’s risk of blood clots.

The study led to the discovery that women had a 15 per cent higher risk of developing blood clots if they take HRT that includes oestrogen derived from horse urine, rather than the synthetic oestradiol.

Dr Yana Vinogradova of the university’s School of Medicine explained: “Our study has shown that, for oral treatments, different tablets are associated with different risks of developing blood clots, depending on the active components.

“Our findings are particularly important information for women who require HRT treatment and are already at increased risks of developing blood clots.”

Speaking to BBC News, Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard of the Royal College of GPs added that further research would be needed to determine whether it is HRT that causes the increased blood clot risk, or a combination of other factors.

Tips for Lowering the Risk of Blood Clots

Even when HRT isn’t a factor, some women may still be at a greater risk of developing blood clots. Risk factors can include having a family history of blood clots, obesity, sustaining a vein injury, having undergone some types of cancer treatment in the past, a recent hospital stay, or regularly sitting for long periods without moving.
