HRT and an Increased Risk of Alzheimer’s
Published in the British Medical Journal and based on data relating to 170,000 women in Finland collected over a period of 14 years, the new research found that taking HRT for ten years or more could raise a woman’s risk of being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s by between nine and 17 per cent.
Experts have urged women not to worry about this increased risk, highlighting that it equates to nine to 18 extra cases of the degenerative condition in every 10,000 post-menopausal women, but it’s understandable that some women may be concerned, especially as HRT has been linked with other worrying side effects in the past.
Commenting on the study findings, Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, chair of the Royal College of GPs, said there were risks with any type of medication and that women should be aware of them.
