5 Menopause Myths Busted
Have you started to notice changes to the way you’re feeling, to your skin and hair, and to your periods? If you’re in your 40s, this could be perimenopause, which is the first stage in a woman’s menopause journey.
So, does this mean that hot flushes will soon be inevitable? Will you definitely see your weight soar? Will you shortly be waving goodbye to the intimate side of your relationship forever? And will you end up suffering from horrific symptoms for the rest of your life?
It’s only natural that some of these questions will cross your mind as menopause approaches, but there’s no need to panic. Menopause and its symptoms can be managed, and there is plenty of support available to help you to carry on feeling like the best version of yourself for the rest of your life.
With this in mind, let’s get busting some of the most common menopause myths:
1. You Will Definitely Get Hot Flushes
Hot flushes affect many women during menopause, but not all. There are actually 34 symptoms of menopause in total, ranging from mood swings to vaginal dryness and from night sweats to cold chills. Women will rarely experience every single one of these, but most likely a combination of some.
If you do find yourself experiencing hot flushes, this is due to a decline in your natural oestrogen levels impacting on your brain’s ability to regulate your body’s temperature controls.
Therefore, to manage hot flushes, you need to find a way to replace your body’s decreased oestrogen supply, try to wear breathable, easily removable layers of clothing, have a fan close by, avoid caffeine, alcohol and spicy food (these can all trigger hot flushes) and open windows where possible.
Natural menopause supplements, such as Femarelle® Recharge, contain ingredients to replace that missing oestrogen in your body. In this case, it’s a derivative of soy known as DT56a that can take on the role of natural oestrogen, helping to regulate your hormonal balance and get symptoms such as hot flushes under control.
2. Men Don’t Go Through Menopause
If you feel as though your partner will never possibly understand what you’re going through, it’s important to take a look at the bigger picture.
Talking to your other half will help them to get more of an idea of how you’re feeling, for example showing them that you don’t find them unattractive all of a sudden, but that you’re struggling with vaginal dryness and your confidence levels, and that’s why you don’t feel like being intimate with them.
In fact, some men experience what’s known as male menopause too, as their testosterone levels fall as they get older, which can see them struggling with weight gain, low mood and erectile dysfunction.
This means your partner may understand what you’re going through much better than you think.
3. You Will Put Weight On
Oestrogen plays a role in regulating your metabolism, so you may find yours affected around the time of menopause, which could see you put on weight if you don’t change your diet accordingly.
However, if you’re taking steps to rebalance your hormonal activity, such as with the Femarelle® menopause supplements that we stock, alongside eating a healthy, balanced diet and taking part in regular exercise, you won’t necessarily put weight on in menopause.
When it comes to deciding which type of exercise to do, weight-bearing exercises are best at this time of your life, as these can help to keep your bones and muscles healthy and strong, protecting them against osteoporosis - something else that can be common among menopausal women.
4. You Will Lose Interest in Sex
With potential weight gain, changes to your skin and hair, and even vaginal dryness affecting many women in menopause, it’s only natural that sex will be the last thing on some women’s minds.
Again, all of these factors are related to a drop in oestrogen levels, so taking menopause supplements that contain ingredients designed to mimic the effects of these hormones in your body could help to remedy these symptoms and potentially boost your sex drive.
Amid all of this, it’s important to continue to be open with your partner, so you can explore other ways to enjoy intimacy in your relationship and so you’re able to work through this time together.
5. You’ll Be Stuck with Your Symptoms Forever
Although once you’ve gone through menopause you’ll be in post-menopause for the rest of your life, this doesn’t have to mean that you’ll be stuck dealing with symptoms like hot flushes, vaginal dryness and weakened bone density forever.
It’s important to adjust the supplements you’re using to manage your symptoms as you move into post-menopause, and this is exactly what Femarelle® Unstoppable supplements are intended for. They contain DT56a, but also vitamin D and calcium to help maintain bone health, and keep you feeling your best.
Ultimately, you should never feel alone in menopause, as there is so much support out there, and never be afraid to ask your GP or pharmacist a question about your symptoms.Check out the full range of Femarelle® menopause supplements here
